The Agricultural Revolution

Updated: Jul 28, 2021

The agricultural revolution has allowed many amazing things to happen. In the crash course on the Agricultural Revolution they use a 99 cent double cheeseburger as an example. There are so many steps needed to create just one cheeseburger. You have to raise some cows, slaughter them, grind the meat so it can be frozen and then shipped to wherever the cheeseburgers will be made. That’s only one part of the cheeseburger! So how did this happen? Read more to find out!

The first thing we are going to talk about is how the agricultural revolution came about. 15,000 years ago humans were hunters and foragers and over a millennial we’ve slowly started using agriculture. There are a lot of guesses as to how agriculture came about but the one that makes a lot of sense is that if something gets you a lot of food, you want to do more of it. Using crops that came up naturally, people started abandoning hunting and foraging and started the agricultural revolution. Another thing that started being used is herding. But this didn’t get as popular since herding requires you to move a lot which therefore makes it very hard to build cities.

Now we are going to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of agriculture. Here are some advantages! You are able to have a controllable food supply which means you have more control over the amount of food you are able to produce. You can have a surplus of food meaning that you can create more food then you actually need. Agriculture can be practiced all over the world and you can farm almost anywhere. Here are some disadvantages. You have to change the environment a lot as the population grows. Even though you can support a lot of people with agriculture it isn’t very good for the environment and the food being produced isn’t always healthy for humans.

Lastly, let’s talk about how agriculture has affected us. Agriculture has affected us in many different ways, good and bad. But either way, it’s not something we can reverse. Most of us are highly dependent on agriculture providing all of our food. We have been able to provide surpluses of food all around the world but we are also destroying our natural environment all around the world. There have been many efforts to keep the benefits agriculture has given us while also trying to lower the disadvantages. For example there have been new technologies that allow us to create vertical farms that are indoors and stacked to reduce the amount of space needed. We can’t get rid of agriculture, but we can try to help reduce the harmful things that come with agriculture.

The agricultural revolution is an extremely important part of our history. It’s not something we can reverse. There are costs and benefits and it has caused many significant changes in our world. The agricultural revolution is something we should all learn about because it was a very important change in the way our ancestors lived and had lasting effects throughout history and in our own lives as well.
