Mother’s day is bigger than Christmas in our house!

We go all out every year giving mom amazing gifts, pampering her, and making her food!

In this project we help you prepare so you can spend the whole day celebrating your mother!

Love Language

Your first step is to find out what your mother loves! The best way to do this is to ask her.

Here are some questions that we recommend before Mother's Day so you can be sure to prepare a day that she will enjoy.

  1. What are your favorite foods?

  2. What do you like to do for fun?

  3. How do you like to relax?

  4. Do you like surprises?

  5. Which friends do you like to see on special occasions?

Our mother enjoy's healthy food and likes to exercise. She also likes spending time outside and relaxing at a spa. Mom is not big on surprises and mostly likes spending time with family.

Mom's answers to these questions helped us prepare the plan below in May of 2020 to make her day extra special. Your mom may be very different so be sure to ask!

Brainstorm Activities

Next you want to brainstorm activities!

Think about your mom's favorite thing to do. If you are having trouble getting ideas on what activities you should plan for Mother’s day ask your mom about her favorite things to do. Your mom may pick an activity that you may not enjoy doing, but just remember don’t complain about it.

Depending on what you mom likes she will want to do things at home, go to places, or go on adventures. You can also plan some surprises, for example, you can set up a performance like a comedy routine or singing. If you think of any other surprises do that too, just make sure that your mom will like it. Always remember to be supportive and encouraging all day of anything your mom wants to do.

Mother's Day Plan

Next you want to make a plan! Your plan will be different than our because every mom is unique and you want to love her in a uniquely beautiful way!

Here is our plan in a nut shell...

  1. Food for breakfast lunch and dinner.

  2. Clean the house

  3. Make cards

  4. Spa Room

  5. Exercise

  6. Mother's Day Sign

1) Food

We made our mom breakfast in bed, lunch and dinner! That's a lot of food so we have to go get groceries with dad the day before. Cooking food for your mom on Mother’s day is really meaningful. To do that you need to figure out what you are going to cook for breakfast and decide whether or not to give her breakfast in bed.

When you are deciding what kinds of foods to make for your mother, think about her favorite foods and google fancy recipes. Before you cook for lunch, you can do extra chores and clean the table. Another thing you can do is to decorate the room. Lastly for dinner you can set up some candles and dim the lights. You might need your dad’s help to figure out recipes and do groceries.

2) Clean the House

Cleaning is an easy way for kids to show love for their mother. It gives her a break from her regular chores for her special day. We like to wake up early on Mother's Day and clean the whole house so that she can wake up to beauty everywhere!

3) Make Cards

Cards are a must for every mom on Mother's Day. Our mom loves it when we make her cards because it takes more effort than buying from a store. She doesn't really care if we mis-spell a word or if the pictures we draw are not professional. Moms just want to feel loved and appreciated by their kids so that's what we recommend.

4) Spa Room

Gifts are great, but you need to know what gifts your mom wants! We know our mom loves to relax and get a foot and massage, so we bought her a "Foot soak" machine. We also gave her a back rub on the coach!

5) Exercise

Our mom also loves to exercise so we made her a "Full Body Workout" video!

A Note on Gifts:

Knowing your mom's personality type can help with choosing gifts as well. We use this Myers-Briggs website to help but there are many others.

Analyst mothers are more likely to enjoy these meaningful gifts: doing a service for her or a house chore that she doesn't like to do, having an interesting conversion, and making her a thoughtful card. Diplomat mothers enjoy long wholehearted messages on their cards, special homemade gifts, support, and quality time. Sentinel mothers (my mom) enjoy cards, gifts, traditions, activities at home, and most importantly quality time. Explorer mothers enjoy having exciting experiences more than gifts, for example, planning a surprise trip to go somewhere you’ve never been.

6) Mother's Day Sign

Finally, we spent some time outside because our mom loves being outside. To spice things up we made a "Happy Mother's Day" sign and chanted by the road for cars to honk. It was a lot of fun. You can watch!

Conclusion

In this article we shared how to plan the best Mother’s Day for your mom. Oftentimes we forget just how much our moms really help us, support us, and love us. Mother’s day is when you show how much you appreciate all the little things they do each and every day. Every mom is different, and you should think about what is going to be the most meaningful for your mom on Mother’s Day!

Sincerely,

Sumay and Aila
